Hunting

A Ghost Hunt ficlet by Chloe

Mai sat against the headboard of her bed in the dimly lit room, worrying her lip between her teeth. She wasn't concerned with the apparitions that would surely fill the house later that night. Her mind was elsewhere, namely on the two Ghost Hunters roaming the haunted dwelling.

Naru was such a bother. It was like admiring a statue, so cold and so beautiful. And yet, when Mai dreamt, Naru was nothing short of a dashing gentleman who belonged in dreams, those that sprung up during day or wooed at night.

He'd kissed her once, after they'd almost died in a cave full of zombies. Naru completely stole her breath away with the best kiss she'd ever gotten - her first one. He'd even used his tongue.  But then he pulled away abruptly, as if he suddenly realized what he'd done. Next, he was ordering her to find Lin and get their camera equipment in the van so they could leave.

Lin was the other reasons for Mai's wandering thoughts. The stoic assistant also kissed her once, and not in the presence of anyone, especially Naru.

There was no reason for Lin's affectionate gesture at all. He's simply stood up from the table one night after they'd finished a nearly silent dinner, and walked behind her to put his dishes in the sink. Then he leaned over her shoulder, gently tipped her chin up towards him, and placed his mouth against hers. It wasn't rushed or demanding, and in fact, it was somewhat chaste. But it melted her panties.

Half the time, Mai was convinced that Lin was part mute-android. To surprise her with a physical show of affection made his kiss all the more puzzling. And exciting.

Sighing in frustration, Mai crawled off the bed and put her robe and slippers on, hoping that a glass of water would wash both men from her mind.

The stairs creaked as she wandered toward the kitchen but she didn't flinch. There were far more frightening things in this world than wooden planks that needed a nail and a hammer.

What did catch her attention was muffled noise in the living room. Perhaps the ghosts had already come out to play.

Curiosity piqued, she pulled the collar of her robe higher on her neck and held it closed with a sweaty palm. Mai tip-toed her way through the darkened hall and stopped just shy of the doorway, peeking her head around the entrance.

There was movement on the far side of the wall. She squinted at the large blob shifting in the shadows. She couldn't identify the shape at all. It appeared to have no definition but it was definitely animated, as if it couldn't contain itself.

She thought about Naru and how he'd tease her about her lack of bravery. Mai also knew Lin would've walked into the room and turn on the light already, if he were here. She had neither Naru's courage nor Lin's confidence, but what she did have was an unhealthy amount of curiosity.

Putting one foot slowly in front of the other, Mai stretched her arm out in front of her, reaching for the lamp on the sofa table. With trembling fingers, she found the delicate pull chain and yanked on it, jumping backwards on defense.

The light filled the room and two very disheveled, very flushed, ghost hunters turned their heads to stare at her. With how close their bodies were, they could have been a two headed (handsome) monster.

Lin's expression was a mix of amusement and arrogance. Naru's face betrayed his irritation although a large dose of smugness tempered this sentiment.

"Oh geeze," Mai stuttered, flinging a hand over her eyes. "I・I didn't know you were・I mean I didn't see you two・

"Mai," Naru said, flipping his bangs away from his eyelashes. "Look at me."

Mai made a few whimpering noises while she debated whether or not to follow through with his order. Finally, she parted her fingers. She honestly thought Lin's hand was still down the front of Naru's trousers. Perhaps, both their trousers・she couldn't tell from this angle.

"Oh I can't," she squeaked and turned her back on them, flushed red from her ears half way down her chest. "I'll just get my water and leave you to your・whatever you were doing."

She made it to the edge of the room and flinched when a warm pair of hands slid over her shoulders. Hot breath tickled her pale neck as Lin nuzzled her ear. "Or, you could join us."

Mai's heart thudded loudly in her chest, but the smart girl didn't retreat.

The lamp dimmed and she stood in darkness again. But this time, the muffled noises came from her.

Well mostly. Naru was quite vocal when Lin did this trick with his tongue.
