Vergil's Baby Bird

by Kika

"A bird. A baby bird."

"Well, it had fallen out of its nest, and it was going to get run over--"

"You rescued a baby bird."

"Dante, I really do not understand why you find it so hard--"

"You rescued a baby bird."

Vergil frowned at his brother's uncharacteristic unwillingness to elaborate. "And why is that so hard to believe?"

"You -- Mr. Let's-Kill-All-The-Humans -- YOU saved a baby bird?!"

Vergil huffed a bit impatiently. "Well I don't want to kill them anymore," he said with what could almost be considered a pout. "Well, usually."

"That's beside the point," Dante said, dismissing that small factor with a wave of his hand. "I still can't get past the fact that you saved the baby bird." He paused for a moment. "Are you going to eat it?"

Frantic cheeping immediately rose from the box before the brothers as if in protest to the idea. Vergil sighed.

"No, I'm not going to eat it. Or torture it. Or feed it to any large, vile creature I keep hidden in my closet." Dante's eyebrows rose, as the idea was just starting to sink in.

"So you just saved it. . . to keep it alive?"

"That's the idea," Vergil replied wryly. Spying a bit of disbelief left in his Dante's eyes, he picked up the box and lifted the lid to allow his brother to peer inside. "Honestly," he said a bit loftily, "Could you have resisted that face?"

There was a moment of silence as the immortal sons of the legendary Dark Knight Sparda faced off with a three-day old baby bird.

Dante sighed in defeat and took a step back from the box. "So. . . what are we going to call it?"
